Manufacturers keep trying to make laptop computers that are more affordable for consumers.
NexDock is a new twist on that concept –- a docking station made up of a 14-inch monitor with a built-in battery and a full-size, Bluetooth keyboard that works with Microsoft’s Windows 10 Continuum feature for mobile phones and tablets. The result is basically a laptop that’s powered by a smartphone or a tablet at a fraction of the price of a traditional laptop.
It’s essentially the same concept as connecting a mobile device to a TV to view whatever is on a smartphone or tablet on a larger screen. NexDock can also be used as a second monitor for a user’s laptop to set up a multi-screen workstation when traveling. NexDock ships this month at $149. But early bird Indiegogo backers have been able to get one for a pledge starting at $79. Its makers set a goal of raising $300,000.
There are likely at least some consumers looking for an affordable laptop or second-screen workstation solution like this, especially when traveling. The 14-inch monitor is likely too small or too large for at least some people, but its makers plan a line of products in a variety of sizes with a range of processors and operating systems.
