There are many action cameras competing for consumer dollars now, although none of have been able to eclipse sales of the GoPro product line yet.
The third-generation ViDi is billed in its Kickstarter campaign as a quality waterproof action camera that was created “for the people” thanks to its design, multiple features and relatively low price in comparison to rival products. The 1080p HD LCD camera can shoot video and still images. It has fully waterproof housing and is waterproof up to 40 feet, according to the campaign.
Other features include a fisheye lens, 4x digital zoom, loop recording, time lapse, a delay timer and High Dynamic Range modes. It also comes with a 4-GB microSD card already inserted. The camera is expected to ship in December. A retail price isn’t provided, but early bird backers can get one as low as $69. Its makers set a goal of raising $25,000 by Dec. 11.
If ViDi works as well as promised, both underwater and above it, there may be a large base of consumers welcoming it with open arms (and hands) despite low-cost newcomers such as action cameras from Activeon. But consumers who can afford one of GoPro’s more popular action cams may want to opt for one of them instead — especially if, for some reason, they want to take the cameras underwater deeper than 40 feet. After all, GoPro rates its high-end GoPro Hero Black as waterproof up to 131 feet, according to GoPro. That camera also boasts a touch-screen display, which ViDi lacks.
