Hailstonez ice spheres chill your drinks, won’t ruin them with dilution

While the right drink can be the perfect complement to a well-cooked meal, a drink that’s watered down certainly distracts from it.

So Hailstonez is changing the way that drinks are kept chilled. The product was thought of using the concept of heat transference through solids; in this case, cold retention. Since a sphere has the lowest surface-area-to-weight ratio of all shapes, a sphere of frozen ice is better than an ice cube. Less surface area of the ice in contact with any liquid means that ice spheres won’t melt as quickly, which in turn means drinks dilute less rapidly. The vertical stack method that Hailstonez uses allows for the ice mold to be filled faster, and it takes up less space in the freezer. The mold makes 96 ice spheres. Plans are in the works for both 1.5 and 2.5 inch ice balls.

This particular product seems like it has some potential, and is much more clearly explained than the Glacious LE ice sphere campaign. This campaign seeks to raise $58,000 on Kickstarter. Early bird backers get one product for $30 with an expected delivery of May 2015.

Glacious LE creates frozen spheres that let it go slowly when melting

Many would say that the cold never bothered them anyway, but a watered down drink is another story. So the creators of Glacious LE have figured out a way to redesign the ice cube so that it is more effective. The product’s claim to fame is that it creates spherically shaped ice, which takes longer to melt than any other shape of ice. That means that it takes longer for the drink to become watered down. The product is made of aluminum and boasts of not requiring any electricity to make the ice.

It seems like there is a lot of detail missing regarding how and why this product is truly effective. Interested backers may also want to check out the Icealot campaign. Those who are especially partial to a cold drink that they don’t have to fetch for themselves might want to check out the Rover campaign. This campaign seeks to raise $10,000. For $99, backers get one product with expected delivery in January 2015.

Icealot gives you balls of ice

Most people don’t know that the cloudy, white ice we pull out of our freezers to serve to guests on a hot summer day or to enjoy in our drink of choice isn’t really the best. Since the experience of having ice melt so quickly is such a normal one, most of us never really think twice about it. This leaves our beverages diluted and pretty much ruined by the time you reach mid-cup. iceälot is a system of ice molds designed to be used within a compact freezer box that creates beautifully clear ice free. The molds feature holes that allow impurities to be pushed down through into the water it floats atop, leaving users with smooth, clear ice in a variety of shapes: there are spherical molds, cubes, and sticks, amongst many others. An iceälot freezer box alongside four spherical molds goes for $75, with the option to get additional add-on molds as well, for delivery in March 2015. The campaign is looking for $25,000 to bring iceälot to production.
