One of the hardest parts about taking care of the elderly is preventing them from falling down when one isn’t watching them.

Heimdall is a 3D camera and computing platform that features smart artificial intelligence (AI) monitoring software allowing it to detect danger and accidents. It’s designed primarily for elderly consumers and their caregivers. Heimdall keeps track of when an elderly person may be leaving a room or their home, and when they may be wandering off alone. It detects falls and other accidents before they happen, and alerts caregivers on their mobile devices so they can take action.

Koova2 guards your home or business with canister-like vigilance

The purveyors of connected smart home objects are convinced that smart home robots are the next big thing. For years now, they’ve infiltrated and surveilled — and in some cases, charmed — homeowners into adding their capabilities to the home. Amaryllo International’s Koova 2 is the sequel to the original while updating it with a few key additions.

This new Koova2 doesn’t stray too far from the original’s small, portable form factor — going as far as still claiming it to be the world’s smallest. It packs a 240° viewing range with auto-tracking capabilities augmented with facial recognition and motion sensors for security purposes, along with a wide array of notifications and alerts to keep users in the know about their abode at all times. Now, two-way audio is added to interact with family and friends or scare off would-be burglars, while activity/block zones let user mark areas to receive/not receive alerts for. Koova2 also offers cloud storage for the video it continuously records, offering users 10-second video notifications and three-second video alerts that are all archived for review anytime.

GearEye helps you keep an eye on your gear

Many people have become increasingly reliant on their smartphones, cameras and other electronic devices. One resulting problem is the difficulty in keeping track of all the various lenses, chargers and other accessories that are used in conjunction with devices.

GearEye is an RFID-based tagging and gear management system for ensuring that all gear is in one’s bag or close at hand and, if it’s not, that it can be easily found. It works in conjunction with an Android and iOS app, and uses a smartphone’s smart sensors and RFID GearTag labels to keep track of the user’s gear.

GearEye ships in July at $199 for a SKU that includes a choice of a case or dongle, along with five GearTags for metal items and 15 regular GearTags in a mixture of sizes, and $219 for a SKU that includes 10 GearTags for metal items and 30 regular GearTags in mixed sizes. But Kickstarter backers can order them now for pledges of $129 and $139, respectively. Its makers are out to raise $60,000 by Dec. 30.

Parents like to know what their kids are up to when using interactive devices, whether it’s a computer, smartphone, tablet or even a camera. But cameras don’t typically offer a way for parents to keep tabs on their kids’ activity.

Pello is a child-focused camera with filters and Bluetooth connectivity to a parental smartphone app that allows parents to see the photos their kids are taking. The interactive camera is designed specifically for children, and also allows them to easily share their photos with friends.

The Mercu smart home orb falls short of groundbreaking

On any given day, another product promising to be the center of the connected home experience makes its way to the crowdfunding world. Most of the time, they suffer from lack of connectivity and features, forcing users to combine them with accessories to truly get the most out of them.

With the Mercu, Taiwan-based GalaThings promises an all-in-one product combining surveillance capabilities, sound and motion detection for intruders (and a siren to scare them off), and environmental detection keeping tabs on humidity, temperature, luminance, and smoke. In addition to these features, three other aspects of the Mercu make it particularly useful: Wi-Fi, ZigBee and BLE support, the option to save pertinent video locally with its SD card slot or on cloud storage with Dropbox integration, and an IFTTT interface on its companion smartphone to create custom events.

Any canvas can be a masterpiece with the SprayPrinter

And while it’s is easy to grab some supplies and a canvas and get to work, lack of ability ends up discouraging people rather quickly. What if a tool existed that could allow anyone to be creative, easily? That’s what the SprayPrinter is.

The SprayPrinter is an accessory that attaches to a spray can and wirelessly interfaces with a smartphone or tablet to allow users to spray any image onto any surface. A user simply sets up the smart device on a tripod or other stand facing the canvas to guide the SprayPrinter and then gets to work. The SprayPrinter then understands exactly where to paint, barring users from ever making mistakes. In the end, a beautiful pre-selected or custom image is printed, making the SprayPrinter perfect for gift-giving, decorating or just having some fun.

Loupedeck lets you edit photos without going loopy

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software makes it easier for photographers to organize their images. But computers aren’t exactly the most user-friendly devices to use that software with.

Loupedeck is a photo editing console for Lightroom complete with knobs and sliders that makes photo editing faster, improving efficiency and allowing users to be more creative with their images. It replaces the mouse and keyboard, and works seamlessly with Macintosh and Windows operating systems.

Daisho, in a dash, transforms your camera gimbal into shoulder rig

Motorized gimbals have significantly improved camera stabilization. However, gimbals are often difficult to use and too cumbersome for real-world film and video shooting.

patent-claimedDaisho is a 90-degree clamp that overcomes such issues, converting a gimbal into a lightweight shoulder rig to stabilize cameras while shooting. With the patent-pending clamp, people shooting video can now convert virtually any gimbal on the market into an ergonomic and lightweight stabilizer, making it easier to take difficult shots. Daisho has also been designed to accept industry standard 15-mm rods and uses standard M5 bolts – an apparent indication that it’s compatible with at least most gimbals on the market.

Daisho starts shipping in November. Future pricing isn’t provided. But Kickstarter backers can order one for a pledge starting at $78. Its makers hope to raise $27,000 to cover the cost of Daisho production by Nov. 26.

Camera gimbals have become a growing product category and it is indeed often a chore to use at least some of them. Therefore, there is a clear market for Daisho.

CamBuddy Pro controls your camera from smartphones, tablets

Smart controllers that allow photographers to operate their cameras via smartphone have become much in-demand, especially for interchangeable lens cameras (ILCs). That’s largely because they allow people to control the main features of those typically bulky cameras right from the palm of the user’s hand.

CamBuddy Pro is a Wi-Fi-enabled smart controller for ILCs that offers live-view, time-lapse and four built-in triggering sensors. It works in conjunction with a free Joopic app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, and works up to 100 feet away from the camera. CamBuddy Pro starts shipping in December. Future pricing is $149. But Kickstarter backers have been able to order one for a pledge starting at $89 for early birds. Its makers are out to raise $30,000 by Nov. 13.

The LyfieEye tosses Android users a bone in 360°

While the technology industry pivots toward more immersive experiences, the ways in which users can actually create this content are limited. And those that are available can be prohibitively expensive.

The LyfieEye is a spherically-shaped 360° camera designed with Android phones in mind. It takes HD quality photos and can record videos of up to 30fps with its pair of dual cameras, each of which takes a 180° video. The camera’s proprietary system then stitches the two videos together in real time for the final product, which can then be shared on Facebook, Youtube or to a virtual reality headset and consumed that way.
